Given LHC-s Run 1, the ATLAS and CMS experiments at CERN could confidently announce the discovery of a scalar particle of 125 GeV consistent with the Standard Model Higgs boson. This led to the attribution to François Englert and Peter W. Higgs of the Nobel Prize in Physics 2013 for the development of the symmetry breaking mechanism and its signature particle.
