Abstract

IONS KOALA 2016 is the 9th Conference on Optics, Atoms and Laser Applications (KOALA) held annually in Australia and New Zealand as well as an International OSA Network of Students (IONS) conference sponsored by The Optical Society (OSA). IONS KOALA 2016 is being co-hosted by the Monash University OSA Student Chapter and the Swinburne University of Technology joint OSA/SPIE Student Chapter, and with the support of many fantastic organisations, our goal is to bring together a large groups of Honours, Masters and PhD students currently conducting research in any field of optics, atoms and laser applications in Australia, New Zealand and the world KOALA encompasses a broad variety of topics within the field of optics and photonics. These include but are not limited to atomic, molecular and optical physics, quantum optics, spectroscopy, micro and nanofabrication, biomedical imaging, metrology, nonlinear optics and laser physics research. Most attendees are at the very beginning of their careers, so this is a great way to discover a wide range of possible directions within the world of optics and photonics! KOALA is designed to allow students to discuss their research whilst providing them with a chance to network with their peers who are working in various universities across a variety of fields. Our aim is that students gain a fresh perspective as well as the opportunity to learn about exciting research being conducted. Students will also get the chance to develop valuable communication skills through presenting their research to their peers working in a variety of fields. Registration fees are kept as low as possible in keeping with KOALAA¢a‚¬a„¢s aim of providing an open and positive environment for students at all levels to present and discuss their research.
