Abstract

Held regularly since 2001, the ADA conference series has been focused on algorithms and information extraction from astrophysics data sets. It became a strongly interdisciplinary forum where researchers from diverse fields such as Astronomy, Statistics, Mathematics and Computing could interact. In 2014, this series was dedicated to Cosmology, adopting the name Statistical Challenges in 21st Century Cosmology. During that year, the conference had the honor to be the first IAU Symposium on Astrostatistics and Astroinformatics (IAU S306). Along many of its editions, the ADA conference series included hands-on tutorial sessions on advanced data processing topics. In the era of large astronomical surveys that are grappling with unsolved methodological and data challenges, transforming Data into Science is a huge, and exciting, problem, and a large fraction of modern Astronomy depends on solutions to this problem. Nevertheless, postgraduate courses can hardly cope with the pace of development of the modern data analysis methods and tools that may enable researchers to make the best use of their data. This is the main focus of the ADA summer school tutorials: to present advanced data analysis methods and to demonstrate how to use publicly available codes to improve knowledge extraction from large astronomical datasets, enabling a better Science. These tutorials are not intended exclusively for an audience with background in Astronomy, and are mainly aimed for young researchers at MSc, PhD and postdoctoral levels, albeit any researchers are welcome to attend. During the next COSMO21 Conference to be held in 2018 such a session will be organized. In honor of the original conference series, the COSMO21 tutorials preserve the Astronomical Data Analysis name. The ADA9 Summer School will cover topics as: Machine Learning, Bayesian methods, Sparsity-based analysis, Analysis of astronomical data with Python, Compressed sensing based instrumentation, Visualization techniques, Astroinformatics and VO tools. The Summer School will be held in the days before COSMO21, at the same venue, and will include the main tutorials, topic teaser talks, a session for contributed talks and a new networking event. This new networking event of the ADA9 Summer School is aimed to bring together researchers in bleeding edge astronomical data analysis methods and the European space industry. This is an opportunity for European space companies (and start-ups) to meet young and highly motivated candidates with unique knowledge in advanced topics. And at the same time, this is an opportunity to expose these young researchers to the European industry. Finally, this session is also an opportunity for companies to partner with senior researchers and to optimize the organization of consortia to answer European Union and ESA calls.
